We had featured Band of Skulls before but never got to shoot a Super 8 film of them or get to do a Lomography photo shoot for that matter. So when they rolled into town during SXSW and came out to our home base at Frank,
we were really happy to get the chance to actually hang out once again and see what life on the road has been like since their last record, baby darling dollface honey.
They have been out on the road supporting their new release Sweet Sour which we really can't play enough. They performed acoustic and unannounced at our secret SXSW gig. Hearing many of these songs acoustic gave a whole new layer to the electric versions we were all singing in our heads. If you don't know them, Russell, Emma and Matt are all really close childhood friends that were pulling pints in their hometown of Southampton, England. Russell and Matt were friends already playing in a band and then one day Russell meets Emma at an art school he was attending and the rest is history. Also, if you have the albums you should know that Emma's paintings are featured on the covers. We really can't say enough about them as musicians and good people.
BONUS TRACK!
Be sure to check out the Band of Skulls bonus session tracks "Devil Takes Care Of His Own" and "Impossible" on our Facebook page!
For Band of Skulls, I shot a few texture rolls of film underwater in a pool around my way and then rolled the film back to the beginning and shot the band on top of the existing pool shots. Something that is really fun and you can.t do digitally. I used an underwater housing from Lomography called a Krab with my LCA-+ and then used different color filters on my Colorsplash flash. The portraits also turned out really well on this shoot. I used a Diana F+, Close up Lens and Ringflash to pull these off.
Check out the gear we used and if you have questions about shots you can direct them to questions@transistorsix.com. We will feature some of them on our Facebook pages with answers. Please be specific about the photo in question and we will try to get back to you.
